‘Syre’ by Jaden Smith ,, review by Dhruv Nair

Review:

The first time I had ever heard Jaden Smith rap was on his album SYRE. SYRE was just one of those projects that had a good amount of replay value for me with songs like Ninety, Fallen, BLUE & Falcon being some of my favorites. Jaden Smith to me has always a good artist when it comes to using his vocals & being able to structure a song perfectly. I feel like that’s his biggest strength & also his flow is pretty nice. SYRE came as a surprise to me because who would of thought that the son of Will Smith could make a debut project that’s kinda enjoyable tbh. I would say this album gets a lot of hate because of the exact reason. The first 4 songs are literally some of the best song structures & transitions that I’ve heard in 2017. The production & instrumentals, the added vocals, and even Jaden Smith’s lyrics at times were great & helped grabbed the listeners attention. My biggest criticism & problem with this project is Jaden Smith’s rapping ability. I feel like he’s trying too hard to say something & it’s sounds “fake deep or pretentious” & it can come off as being a bit corny. I mean in one of the songs he says he’s “coming to save rap” knowing that that line was not gonna be perceived well. I feel like the best songs on this album are the tracks where Jaden Smith isn’t trying be lyrical or work & is more so just using his creativity to tell us the story of “SYRE”. I love the fact that Jaden does a bit experimenting tho throughout this project which shows that he’s not afraid to try different things. I feel like with time Jaden Smith can turn into a very interesting Artist due to him being pretty creative & aware of how to craft his music, somewhat like a Tyler, Gambino or Kid Cudi not going to lie. Not saying he’s on par with them but he reminds me a bit of their styles. As far as his discography goes, this is definitely his best project tho. I’m actually pretty excited for his upcoming project “ERYS” to see on what he has improved since then but yeah this project is definitely overhated.
